Frequently Asked Questions

 What is Social Wallpapering?

socwall.com Logo

Social Wallpapering is a public effort to classify, rank, and distribute high-resolution images for use as desktop backgrounds. Supported resolutions include 1280x960, 1280x1024, 1600x1200, and all other background variations with a minimum width and height of 1280x720 pixels.

Socwall employs several technologies to function, such as cascading style sheets (CSS), asynchronous javascript and XML (AJAX) requests, an open source relational database management system (MySQL), and a server-side cross-platform HTML embedded scripting language (PHP). The idea for Socwall originated in March 2006 by Kirk Ouimet, who is the founder and maintainer of the web site.

The design of Socwall was inspired by the great potential of community-based interactive websites, which are commonly referred to as Web 2.0 websites. The author of this site was particularly influenced by Kevin Rose's excellent digg.com.

Social Wallpapering is an attempt to create the greatest high-resolution wallpaper resource on the planet.

 What can I upload?

Your wallpaper must pass a validation test. Socwall will automatically scan your wallpaper to verify these criteria:

  • Valid file type (jpg, jpeg, gif, bmp)
  • Does not already exist in database
  • File size under 3000 KB
  • Resolution at least 1280x720

The content of each wallpaper must considered "safe for work." Any images that are vulgar, immoral, inappropriate, suggestive, or pornographic in any way will be promptly removed. Concerning image copyright issues as well as other user submission policies, please see section 5 of Social Wallpapering's Terms of Use.

Why the minimum width requirement of 1280?

Social Wallpapering is dedicated to providing high-quality and high-resolution wallpapers. 1280 pixels is the Socwall's arbitrarily set standard deemed as "high resolution."
